Skin Infections

Skin infections can cause discomfort and irritation, leading to redness, swelling, and even pus-filled blisters. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and are often treated with antibiotics or antifungal medication. Proper hygiene and avoiding contact with contaminated objects or surfaces can help prevent skin infections.

About this Service
Our Skin Infections service is dedicated to providing effective and personalized treatments for all types of skin infections. Our team of experts specializes in diagnosing and treating various conditions such as acne, eczema, and fungal infections. We strive to promote healthy and clear skin for our patients.

Skin Infections Symptons

Skin infection symptoms often include redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and itching, but can also involve pus-filled bumps (boils), crusty sores (impetigo), blisters, or scaly patches (fungal). More severe infections can cause fever, chills, red streaks, and confusion, requiring immediate medical attention.

  • Redness/Discoloration: Skin becomes red or darker in the affected area.
  • Swelling & Warmth: The area feels puffy and hot to the touch.
  • Pain/Tenderness: Increased sensitivity and soreness.
  • Itching: Can range from mild to intense.
  • Pus-filled spots: Boils, abscesses, or pimple-like bumps.
  • Crusting/Blisters: Sores that crust over or form blisters (like impetigo).
  • Scaling: Flaky, dry skin, often with fungal infections.

Who is at risk?

People at higher risk for skin infections often have a weakened immune system (due to age, HIV, chemo, steroids), chronic conditions (like diabetes, eczema, poor circulation, psoriasis), skin damage (cuts, bites, IV drug use), or live/work in crowded or close-contact environments (dorms, sports, healthcare settings). Anyone can get an infection, but breaks in the skin barrier allow bacteria or fungi to enter, increasing vulnerability.

Treatment

Treatment for skin infections depends on the type and severity, and may include topical creams, oral antibiotics, or, in severe cases, intravenous antibiotics. Mild infections can often be treated with antibiotic creams, while more serious infections might require oral antibiotics. Viral infections need antiviral treatments, fungal infections require antifungals, and parasitic infections may need antiparasitic medication.

Complications

Skin infection complications range from localized issues like abscesses, scarring, and deeper tissue spread (cellulitis) to severe, life-threatening systemic problems such as sepsis, meningitis, organ failure (heart, lungs, brain), and toxic shock syndrome, especially if the infection is bacterial (like MRSA) or a deep fungal invasion, impacting immunocompromised individuals or those with underlying conditions like diabetes. Serious signs needing urgent care include high fever, confusion, rapid heart rate, and purple skin patches, indicating potential sepsis.
