Chest Infections

Chest infections are a common problem that can range from mild discomfort to serious health complications. These infections can be caused by a variety of factors such as viruses, bacteria, or environmental irritants. It is important to seek medical attention if symptoms persist to prevent further complications and promote speedy recovery.

About this Service
Our Chest Infections service provides comprehensive care for patients suffering from respiratory illnesses. Our skilled team of doctors and nurses use state-of-the-art treatments to effectively treat and manage chest infections. With personalized care and a compassionate approach, we strive to help our patients breathe easier and recover quickly.

Chest Infection Symptons

  • Cough: Can be dry or productive, bringing up yellow, green, or even bloody phlegm.
  • Breathing Issues: Shortness of breath, rapid breathing, wheezing, or chest pain when breathing.
  • General Malaise: High temperature, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

Who is at risk?

People at higher risk for chest infections (bronchitis, pneumonia) include babies, young children, the elderly (over 65), smokers, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, diabetes, or heart disease, plus anyone with a weakened immune system, as their bodies struggle to fight off germs that cause these respiratory infections.

Home Care & Treatment

Rest: Allow your body to recover.
Fluids: Drink plenty of water to help thin mucus.
Steam: Inhaling steam can ease congestion.
Pain Relief: Over-the-counter meds like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
Antibiotics: Only for bacterial infections; complete the full course if prescribed.

Complications

Complications from a chest infection can include pneumonia, leading to more serious issues like a lung abscess, a pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs), or septic shock. These can cause severe breathing difficulties, and in rare cases, the infection may spread to the bloodstream or cause other organs to fail
